notes on multimedia
From my intro to multimedia class.
to design is to materially encapsulate life
self made work encapsulates YOUR life, builds your own life and reflects your ideals and work
in a world constantly asking for attention, searching for novel and new, it’s healthy to do something for yourself, to make something that lasts
Designing for myself or others is an act of generosity, acknowledging their needs and wants in the material form
- We should be honoured to represent people
multimedia is hybrid:
- have a voracious appetite for making things differently, for mixing and matching in ways you haven't thought to do before
multimedia is time:
multimedia is transformation:
- theo jansen, animaris unevus, the question of if machinery is alive?
multimedia is material:
- hannah perry rage fluids, playing with pliability of metal
everything exists in the world, in the metal of the computer, the glass of the screen. the digital world is a material world. measured in co2
dispelling the myth that the digital is less environmentally heavy than the physical *digital, far away concepts (ie internet), much more intensive and *physical than they seem to the average consumer behind these hidden systems (computer servers), there’s real systems at work (people, mining) * agnes denes, wheatfield
multimedia is embedded into larger systems (traffic light as electrical, cultural, legal)
multimedia is aesthetic:
- but who defines what is beautiful, that definition?
multimedia is practice:
- arguing for the difference between process and practice. process is methodical, practice is cultural. processes happen naturally, biologically. Things do not always come naturally, whether you want them to or not. There is no architectural PROCESS, only architectural PRACTICE. Practice grows with time, while process is stagnant.
Multimedia should be ethical. there should be ample care in every step, the theme, the practice, the meaning, and it is worth the push. Accountability.
It’s not as important what a thing looks like, but it’s function, what use it provides
broadly, only 1% of the world goes to university. no need to feel guilty, but have awareness and appreciation for the opportunity you have, the rareness of that.
historically, paintings can have multiple interpretations, but can only BE one thing. it can only be a painting.
The definition, term of multimedia is something to be determined for yourself. begin to cultivate an INDIVIDUAL DESIGN LANGUAGE. you have the capability to create whatever you want, so JUST DO IT.
there will always be good designers for corridors, elevators, whatever. relish when you can be the creative director. you want to be that person, it is joyful. cultivating your own language is wonderful to pursue because you gain the capacity to BE the creative, and not the parking lot designer.
You will ABSOLUTELY find something that you excel at in your education, take that and run with it. That’s the beauty of multimedia, there will always be an aspect that you’re good at.
There is no one skill that has more value than the other, you will be individually valuable at a firm, find your niche.
take permission to pursue your own interests in your projects, put your intellect in all the work that you do. Either you use old methods to explore new ideas, or new methods to explore old ideas.
consider seeing the city, the world through the eyes of someone else. the animal, the impaired.
it is difficult to claim that we care about the environment, when we never draw or write about the environment.
The term design language - how you use it, has fallen out of favour, too individualistic when we should be working on issues that affect us collectively. design allows us to individually address collective concerns.
