the studio
As an architecture student, we each got a desk in the first-year studio that's exclusively ours, 24/7. I've spent several hours in it since I've gotten here, and almost every night I've popped my head in for something.
Here's some points of interest outside of the actual studio in the building:
- The piano right at the entrance that I've been practicing on every day.
- The comfy armchairs right outside the studio, with a chess table (no chess pieces though?)
- The student lounge with it's bright orange and grey couches, looking straight out of the architectural digest.
Here's the stuff that I keep at my desk:
- My drafting table and cutting board.
- My pencil case with all the fix ins, don't need to get into detail.
- Rulers and straightedges, both drafting and otherwise.
- A hand-painted bowl I thrifted from the salvation army. In this bowl I have:
- Some graham crackers I got from Bulk Barn with my roommate, the teddy bear kind.
- Orange peels hanging off, drying for when I want orange tea later in the year.
- Tissue box from when I had the freshman flu earlier, thank you to my roommate's parents for bringing them to me!
- Old piano parts that I got for my next drawing project, no idea what I'm going to do with them. Sigh.
I've taken great interest in cataloguing my life lately. Maybe it's to give myself a sense of control or quantity about my life? Like, yes, everything may go wrong, but I DO have graham crackers at my desk.
Here's a few more things I forgot to mention. The lovely people of the studio:
- A guy who's always willing to talk no matter what time, what hour. I think he must get zero sleep. I'm sure he did in the first week or two, but he tends to procrastinate his work until the very last second, finishing multiple projects in the span of one all nighter. Unhealthy, but his work is phenomenal.
- The guy who sits across from him who may just be one of the most interesting people I've ever talked to. He's from the countryside, and the stories that I hear from him are honestly baffling compared to the life that I lead in the city. Whereas my school panicked over mysterious packages arriving, his school had people bringing their guns to class. No big deal, they were just going hunting after school. Like what?! He also has really inspiring work, just really thought out and beautiful technical work. He made his own charcoal for every piece of his portfolio, that absolutely blew me away.
- A girl who's off res, who's shown me around the city a few times and is really cool. She also went to art school in high school, and so we share the same bond of having a specialized program that we were allowed to flourish in. She's also eastern European, although more northern than me. I still feel that connection though.
Every week that I'm here I find that there's more little things to discover, more to appreciate. I'm going home for thanksgiving and my reading week, and I'm so excited! I also now have this weird little thought of missing my studio space. It's weird to have two separate but equal homes in different ways.
